Food our Priority
Guyana is leveraging its vast arable land and abundant freshwater resources to strengthen food security at both the national and regional levels. By utilizing these natural assets, the country aims to stabilize food prices and ensure a consistent supply of agricultural products, reducing reliance on imports. This strategic approach positions Guyana as a key player in global and regional food markets, enhancing its agricultural resilience.
To further boost domestic food production, the government is reinvesting oil revenues into the agricultural sector, funding modernization efforts, expanding farming infrastructure, and improving access to agricultural technology. These investments are expected to increase output, create jobs, and promote long-term food sustainability, reinforcing Guyana’s ability to meet local and international demand.
As a regional leader in food security, Guyana is spearheading an initiative within CARICOM to reduce the Caribbean’s food import bill by 25% by 2025. This initiative emphasizes self-sufficiency, innovation, and strategic partnerships to enhance food production across the region. Through these efforts, Guyana is positioning itself as a driving force behind sustainable agriculture, ensuring greater food independence for the Caribbean.
