Guyana sacrificing billions to preserve much-needed forests- Pres. Ali talks up environmental commitment

Guyana’s forests, almost the size of England and Scotland combined, help protect the earth by storing gigatons of harmful gases and to keep these forests intact, President Dr. Irfaan Ali highlighted that Guyana is sacrificing billions in potential revenue.

“If the world is to work in a fair manner, forget about oil and gas…Our forests stand at US$195 billion dollars, from a carbon perspective,” President Ali said during a virtual forum on Monday.

President Ali says developing countries can spearhead climate solutions

Acknowledging the devastating effects of climate change and the urgent need for coordinated meaningful action, President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has stated that developing nations can play a crucial role in crafting and implementing sustainable solutions to tackle the global climate crisis.

The president was at the time addressing a high-level discussion on ‘Restoring Ambition for International Climate and Development: Learning from Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy, and Its Global Model for Forest Finance’ at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre on Tuesday.

Prime Minister of India, the Honourable Shri Narendra Modi, is set to arrive in Guyana on Tuesday for a three-day visit, following President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s invitation.

The two leaders are expected to delve into a wide array of issues, with particular emphasis on military cooperation and addressing the challenges of climate change.

Guyana is making significant progress in climate adaptation and Amerindian development with resources earned from the landmark Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030 framework.

The revised strategy, led Guyana to secure the largest carbon deal globally, valued at US$750 million in 2022. The deal is part of the Architecture for REDD+ Transaction (ART) initiative and will see the nation earning revenues for its forest carbon from 2022 to 2032.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has called on the leadership of the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) to integrate artificial intelligence (AI), climate resilience, and military diplomacy as key pillars of its defence strategy.

In his opening address at the 2025 Annual Officers’ Conference on Thursday at Base Camp Ayanganna, President Ali stressed that a modern defence approach is essential to addressing rapidly evolving security threats.
