Government reaffirms commitment to workers’ rights

─ signs third Decent Work Country Programme

Guyana has once again signalled its commitment to support safe working conditions and labour standards after signing its third Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP).

The move has reaffirmed the government’s plans to advance labour rights, strengthen social protection, and ensure decent work for all Guyanese.

The agreement was signed during the opening of the International Labour Organisation’s (ILO) 13th Caribbean Ministers of Labour Meeting, at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).

Roadworks in Region Five progressing swiftly

Several road projects in the Mahaica-Berbice region are advancing rapidly, with completion expected by the end of 2025. These upgrades are set to transform the region’s infrastructure.

During a visit to Region Five on Thursday, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill inspected ongoing works along the Mahaica Public Road and urged contractors to maintain their schedules.

Speaking at a community meeting during his visit, Minister Edghill highlighted the government’s progress in road development.

Guyana, US ink MoU to deepen security cooperation, address regional challenges

Guyana and the United States of America on Thursday inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to deepen security cooperation and address regional challenges.

The document was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd and visiting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the State House in Guyana’s capital, Georgetown.

The pact will see the two countries working closely to tackle transnational crime and to deter drug trafficking in the Caribbean region.

Threatening Guyana is a big mistake – US Secretary of State Rubio

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Thursday declared that any threats made against Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity would be a “big mistake.”

Rubio made these remarks during a press briefing at the State House in Georgetown on Thursday during an official visit.

“It would be a very bad day for Venezuela…if they were to attack Guyana or ExxonMobil. It would be a very bad day, and a very bad week. It would not end well for them,” he asserted.

Transformative years ahead for Guyana under Ali’s leadership – US Secretary of State

Over the next five to ten years, Guyana is set for a significant transformation in its economy and the quality of life for its people under the leadership of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali.

These were the sentiments expressed by United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio during his official state visit to Guyana on Thursday.

He said Guyana can develop rapidly, improve the lives of its citizens, and contribute positively to regional growth.

Gov’t developing AI-based app for Malaria testing

The government is developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) application for malaria testing, aiming to eradicate the disease.

Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony announced the initiative at the launch of the Universal Healthcare Voucher held at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre at Liliendaal, last Saturday.

Dr Anthony noted that this initiative is being executed through a collaboration with Harvard University.

The app, already tested in Region Nine with 99% accuracy, targets malaria, a prevalent infectious disease in the region.

DHB construction to be accelerated with 200 new skilled workers

To expedite the completion of the new Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB), China Railway Construction International Limited (CRCCL) will add 200 skilled workers, including engineers, to the project.

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali during an early morning site visit on Tuesday, received the update from CRCCL representatives. He was informed that the additional workforce would focus on completing the bridge’s main spans.

Government to support students affected by Mae’s School fire

The government stands ready to support pupils affected by the massive fire that demolished Mae’s School at Subryanville in Georgetown Wednesday morning.

Minister of Education Priya Manickchand told reporters that the government will reach out to the school’s administration to accommodate displaced students, especially those preparing to write the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines to begin operations here in June

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines will commence operations in Guyana on June 4, 2025.

In preparation for the airline’s entry, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill and his delegation met with the KLM delegation to discuss logistical and operational matters on Wednesday at the ministry’s headquarters.

The team included KLM’s Regional Manager Dirk Buitelaar, the Country Sales Manager for Suriname and Guyana Nalini Kanhai, and Sales Manager for Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao, Danilo De Freytas.

Minister within the Office of the Prime Minister with Responsibility for Public Affairs, Kwame McCoy has underscored that Guyana’s development will be further advanced if Guyanese reject division and embrace every opportunity to work together for national progress.

The minister was at the time delivering remarks at the Flag Raising Ceremony in Observance of Guyana’s 55th Republic Anniversary, hosted by the Region Four Regional Democratic Council on Friday.
